VCBC (Vantage Charity Boxing Challenge) finished off their year in style with a sell out White Collar / Boxing event. The concept took off in 2015 when Vantage Sporting Group began including White Collar bouts on their events to assist with their charity fund raising. From there this angle went from strength to strength. Over the course of 3 events the amount raised exclusively for good causes has been almost £40,000. Promoter Ty Temel insisted on working with the IAB to keep the high standards running throughout the brand. IAB / IKF European Director Carl Sams became directly involved, implementing a standard of fighter and medical care rarely seen in White Collar Boxing. |
Once registered, each prospective fighter attends a meeting which is hosted by the IAB to explain the process. At this point each competitor receives a pre training medical after filling out a medical history form. Every competitor over the age 40, even if they pass the medical is required to produce additional documentation from their doctor or specialist before continuing. Any competitor flagging up issues is referred accordingly and training is suspended for them. There have been occasions prior to each VCBC event where serious and previously unknown issues have been detected. In one particular case a competitor was referred straight to the hospital from the medical. If he had not undergone this process he would have been at risk just walking down the street daily. During the 8 week training program competitors are weighed and their skill level assessed by the coaches and IAB representatives. Some are asked to step out of the current process but continue training for a longer duration. Some are asked to step out as they have obviously arrived with previously undisclosed skills and there will be no fair match for them. Two weeks before the event, a 'Skills bout' interclub is held for final assessments, and then matches are confirmed. On fight day we have the official weigh in followed by the pre contest medical. Following the contest there is a post fight medical, plus follow up communication with any fighter who has been stopped or injured. All of these measures are standard procedure for the IAB and probably the highest level of care provided in the United Kingdom for White Collar Boxers. Couple this with the huge amount of money raised for worthy causes and you have a fantastic concept supported and regulated by the IAB!

Once again the VCBC team in association with the IAB put on a faultless event that gave us all the thrills and spills associated with top class promotions. As always, the basis of this concept is raising money for charity using White Collar Boxing, the way it was intended. The previous event had raised £11800, and although the final figures are not yet in, this event looks to be a similar amount. That's almost £25,000 to charity in 3 months over 2 events! The venue, probably one of the best in the country, was absolutely packed - Sold out days in advance with no tickets available on the door. And the crowd certainly got their monies worth. In between the White Collar bouts some well placed Amateur and Professional bouts spiced up the proceedings. FEATURE BOUTS

IKF
Amateur Women's Full Contact Rules In this much anticipated World Title contest, the highly decorated Cristina Caruso travelled from Italy to contest the IKF belt against the hard working Sarah Worsfold. Worsfold has been a fantastic ambassador for the IKF, winning and defending titles at every level en route to this opportunity. From the outset this looked to be a match of contrasting styles. Caruso very much wanted to work from the legs but Worsfold used her front leg to close the range before punching, with a fair amount of success. The early rounds were difficult to score with the Italians work more eye catching. But Worsfolds solid work ethic notched up the points, making it difficult for an audience to score. As we moved into the later rounds Caruso became more comfortable and controlled more of each round. But it was far from one sided, and you had to take into account Worsfolds solid early work. The work rate was one of the evenings highest and this was well worthy of it's 'World Title' tag. At the final bell it looked very tight and the split decision reflected that. Congratulations to Cristina Caruso from Italy, who becomes the new IKF World Champion!

This was the first in a series of charity based Boxing events staged by the VANTAGE group in association with the IAB, and it played out to a completely sold out house. With a main card of quality bouts backed up with no less than 19 white collar bouts, the audience certainly got their monies worth. Unfortunately the main event between Jason Wheeler and Sean Callaghan was dealt a double blow late in the day. Wheeler was injured in an un-related sports injury, and whilst a substitute was being found, Callaghan suffered a ruptured spleen and punctured lung in another incident. We are happy to report that both fighters are expected to make a full recovery. This event is designed to raise money for local charities through Boxing. In this instance, Julia's House, a hospice for children with life shortening issues benefitted to the tune of almost £11,000, with more money still coming in, Congratulations to the Boxing community for their generosity.
